Palencia is a province located in northern Spain. Think of a province like a large region or state within a country. It shares its borders with several other Spanish provinces. These include León, Cantabria, Burgos, and Valladolid.

Palencia province covers an area of 8,052 square kilometers. This makes it the 29th largest province in Spain. It represents about 1.6% of the total land area of Spain.
Population and Capital City
In 2002, the province of Palencia had a population of 176,125 people. A big part of this population, about 45%, lives in the main city. This main city is also called Palencia. The city of Palencia is special because it is located on the Canal de Castilla. This canal is an important waterway.
Local Government
The province is divided into many smaller areas. These areas are called municipalities. There are 191 different municipalities within the province of Palencia. Each municipality has its own local government.
