Park History: How it Began

Early Ideas for a Resort

Back in the 1860s, a man named Daniel B. Funk had a cool idea. He was an early settler in the Sanpete Valley. Daniel wanted to create a special place for people to relax on weekends and during the summer.

Building the Lake

At that time, a small group of Sanpitch Indians lived in the valley. Their leader was Chief Arapeen. Daniel B. Funk made a deal with Chief Arapeen for the land. He then got an official land patent from the government.

Daniel and his family worked very hard. They built a dam and moved some water from Sixmile Creek. This water helped fill the lake. The lake quickly became a popular spot for fun and relaxation. Today, we know this beautiful place as Palisade State Park.
