Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Pallur Rayrappan was a brave supporter of Pazhassi Raja, a ruler from Kerala, India. He helped Raja fight against the British East India Company in the early 1800s. They used clever fighting methods in the forests.

Who Was Pazhassi Raja?

Pazhassi Raja was a local ruler who did not want the British East India Company to control his land. The British were a powerful trading company that was taking over parts of India. Raja fought against them to protect his people and his kingdom.

Fighting the British

After a big battle, Pazhassi Raja had to go into the forests of Wayanad with his family. From there, he started a special kind of war called a guerrilla campaign. This means he and his fighters used quick, surprise attacks and then hid again. They knew the forests very well, which helped them fight the British. Raja continued this fight until he died in 1806.

Pallur Rayrappan's Role

Pallur Rayrappan was one of Pazhassi Raja's most loyal helpers. He fought alongside Raja against the British soldiers in the thick forests of Kerala. The British wanted to stop these fighters. They even offered a reward of 300 pagodas (an old type of money) to anyone who helped catch Rayrappan.

His Brother, Pallur Eman

Rayrappan's younger brother, Pallur Eman, was also a part of Raja's fighting group. He was also very important to the resistance. The British offered an even bigger reward of 1000 pagodas for his capture. This shows how much the British wanted to stop these brothers and their allies.

Rayrappan's Last Stand

Pallur Rayrappan bravely fought the British until his last day. He was killed in January 1806 during a battle on a hill called Tirumalapad, near Nilambur. Before he was captured, he managed to seriously injure a British soldier. His fight showed his strong loyalty to Pazhassi Raja and his cause.
