Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Palmira Jaquetti i Isant (1895–1963) was a talented woman from Catalonia, Spain. She was many things: a folklorist, a poet, a businesswoman, a composer, a musicologist, an ethnologist, and a writer. This means she studied old traditions and songs, wrote poems and music, ran businesses, and learned about different cultures.

A Life of Learning and Music

Palmira Jaquetti was born in 1895 in Barcelona, a big city in Spain. After finishing her studies, she became a teacher. She taught music and French literature at a high school.

Palmira also wrote poetry. Her book of poems, La estrella dentro del hogar (which means The Star Within the Home), was published in 1938. This book showed her deep feelings and musical style. She also created small books of songs.

Collecting Folk Songs

Between 1925 and 1940, Palmira did very important work. She traveled around to collect popular songs for a project called Obra del Cançoner Popular de Catalunya. This project was about gathering traditional songs from Catalonia.

Palmira was one of the most important people collecting these songs in the world. She worked with others like d'Aoust, María Carbó Soler, and Mercè Porta Pino. The huge number of songs they collected together was a major achievement. Even when the project stopped during the Spanish Civil War, Palmira kept collecting songs on her own.

After the war, she continued teaching French. Sadly, she died in 1963 in Santa Margarida i els Monjos after a traffic accident.

Her Legacy

In 1927, Palmira married a Belgian painter named Enrique Daoust. Their marriage ended in 1934.

Palmira Jaquetti's important work is kept safe. Her collection of writings and research can be found at the National Library of Catalonia. This helps future generations learn about her contributions to music and culture.
