The Palmolive Building is a tall, 37-story building in Chicago. It is located on Michigan Avenue. This building was finished in 1929. It was designed by the famous architects Holabird & Root.
The building was first home to the Colgate-Palmolive-Peet Corporation. This company made soap and other products. The Palmolive Building has a special design style. It is called Art Deco. This style was popular in the 1920s and 1930s.
In 2000, the building became a Chicago Landmark. This means it is an important historical place in Chicago. In 2003, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important places across the United States.
In 2001, the building was sold. It was changed into homes. The first two floors are now offices and shops. The upper floors have fancy apartments called condos. The building's business address is still 919 North Michigan Avenue. But the homes have a different address: 159 East Walton Place. A famous actor, Vince Vaughn, once lived here. He owned a very large apartment on the top floors.
The Lindbergh Beacon
A special light called a beacon was added to the building in 1930. It was named after the famous pilot Charles Lindbergh. This beacon was very powerful. It rotated all the way around. Its job was to help guide airplanes. It showed them the way to Midway Airport.
The beacon shone brightly for many years. But in 1981, it stopped working. People living in nearby buildings complained about the bright light. When the Palmolive Building was turned into homes, the beacon was changed. It now rotates back and forth. It always points towards the waterfront. This way, the light does not shine into other buildings. After these changes, the historic beacon started working again. It is a cool part of Chicago's skyline.
