Different Kinds of Palt

There are many types of Palt. Each one has its own special ingredients or way of being made.

Blodpalt

Blodpalt is an old Swedish dish. It is still quite common in northern Sweden and Finland. This dish comes from a time when people used every part of an animal. This helped them make sure they had enough food.

Blodpalt is made from blood, often from cattle, pigs, or reindeer. This blood is mixed with flour, usually rye, wheat, or barley. After soaking overnight, mashed potatoes are added. The mixture is then shaped into balls and boiled. Blodpalt is often served with fried pork. This makes it a very filling and nutritious meal. It was often eaten during the cold, dark winter months.

Pitepalt

Pitepalt is a type of potato Palt. It is a special dish from the city of Piteå in Sweden. However, different versions of it are eaten all over the country.

Many families in Piteå have their own unique way to make Pitepalt. But they all use a mix of wheat and barley flour. Other kinds of potato Palt might use different flours, like rye. Pitepalt can have different fillings, such as minced meat. Sometimes, it has no filling at all. When it has no filling, it is called flatpalt.

All Palt dishes are made from raw potatoes. Dumplings made from potatoes that have been boiled first are called kroppkakor. Using raw potatoes gives Pitepalt a darker color compared to kroppkakor.
