Pamela Liebeck (born in 1930, died in 2012) was a clever British mathematician. She also taught math and wrote two books about it.

Her Life Story

Pamela was born in Bromley, England, on July 11, 1930. She grew up in Surrey. In 1949, she went to Somerville College, Oxford to study mathematics. While at Oxford, she was also good at sports, playing on the cricket and tennis teams.

After more studies at the University of Cambridge, Pamela became a math teacher. She met her husband, Hans Liebeck, at Oxford. They both loved playing chamber music, which is music for a small group of instruments. They got married in 1953.

In 1955, Pamela and Hans moved to Cape Town in South Africa. Pamela taught math part-time there. She also raised their two children and studied music.

In 1961, the Liebeck family moved back to England. As their three children grew older, Pamela went back to teaching. She taught at Madeley College of Education and then at Keele University. Her husband, Hans, also worked at Keele University.

Pamela's son, Martin W. Liebeck, became a math professor too. He teaches at Imperial College London. Pamela Liebeck passed away on July 3, 2012.

Books She Wrote

Pamela Liebeck wrote two important books about mathematics:

  • Vectors and Matrices (published in 1971)
  • How Children Learn Mathematics: A Guide for Parents and Teachers (published in 1984) - This book helped parents and teachers understand how kids learn math.
