Pamela Edwards Liversidge OBE FREng is a very important engineer from the United Kingdom. She made history by becoming the first woman to lead the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. This is a big group for engineers.

Early Life and Education

Pamela Liversidge was born on December 23, 1949. Her maiden name was Humphries. She studied Mechanical Engineering at Aston University and earned a science degree.

Starting Her Career

After university, Pamela began working at a company called GKN. She was a graduate trainee there. Later, she moved to a small company in Sheffield that worked with forging. Forging is a process where metal is shaped using heat and pressure. After that, she joined the electricity supply industry. She became a director at East Midlands Electricity.

Building Her Own Business

In 1993, Pamela started her own company. This business made special metal powders. These powders were used in medical engineering. For example, they could be used to make parts for medical devices. She also helped create a group called the Association of Institutions in Medical Engineering (AIME). Her company was sold in 1996. After that, Pamela became the managing director of Quest Investments. This company owned several engineering businesses.

Achievements and Recognition

In 1997, Pamela Liversidge became the first female president of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. This was a major achievement. In 1999, she received an OBE. This award recognized her great work in engineering.

Honorary Degrees and Public Service

Pamela has received special degrees from several universities. These include Aston University, University of Huddersfield, and Sheffield Hallam University. These are called honorary degrees. In 2004 and 2005, she served as the High Sheriff of South Yorkshire. This is an old and important role in the community.

Fellowships and Leadership Roles

Pamela is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. She is also a Fellow of the City and Guilds Institute. She is a Freeman of the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire. This is a historic group in Sheffield. She is also a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Engineers.

Her husband, Douglas, was chosen as the Master of the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire in 1998. This meant Pamela held the role of Mistress Cutler. From 2011 to 2012, Pamela herself became the Master Cutler of the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire. She was the first woman to hold this important position.

Legacy and Awards

On February 7, 2014, a new engineering building was opened at the University of Sheffield. It was named the Pam Liversidge Building to honor her. Since 2019, there has been an award named after her. The Pam Liversidge OBE Award for Engineering is given at the Inspirational Women of Sheffield Awards.
