Pan de Azúcar is a city located in the southwest part of the Maldonado Department in Uruguay. The city gets its name from a nearby hill called Cerro Pan de Azúcar. This hill is famous for the huge cross at its top. It's actually in the next-door area of Piriápolis.
Pan de Azúcar is also the name of the larger area, or municipality, that the city belongs to. This municipality includes several smaller places like Gerona, Kilómetro 110, Nueva Carrara, Puntas de Pan de Azúcar, Laguna del Sauce, and Laguna de los Cisnes.

Where is Pan de Azúcar?
The city is found where two roads meet: Route 7 and Route 60. It's about 10 kilometers (6 miles) north-northeast of Piriápolis. You can get there by taking Route 37. Pan de Azúcar is also about 34 kilometers (21 miles) west-northwest of Maldonado, the capital city of the department. You can reach Maldonado using the Routa IB. A small river, the Arroyo Pan de Azúcar, flows along the southwest edge of the city.
A Look at History
Pan de Azúcar was started in October 1874 by a person named Félix de Lizarza. He got help from people living in the city of San Carlos to build it.
The area was first called a "Pueblo," which means village, on April 20, 1887. Later, on September 7, 1961, it was officially made a "Ciudad," meaning city. This happened through a special law called Ley N° 12.908.

In 2011, a count showed that 6,597 people lived in the city of Pan de Azúcar. The local government of Maldonado says that the wider municipality of Pan de Azúcar has about 9,500 residents.
