Panmure railway station is a busy train station in Auckland, New Zealand. It is part of the Auckland railway network and serves the Eastern Line. The station first opened on 16 November 1930. It was moved to its current spot in 2007.

Panmure Station got a big upgrade between 2012 and 2014. This upgrade made it an important place where you can switch between buses and trains. This was part of a larger project called AMETI.

History of Panmure Station

The first Panmure station was built in 1929. It was one of six stations built for the Westfield Deviation. This was a new train route that made the journey faster and flatter. It connected the main train line in Auckland to the original tracks at Westfield Junction.

Opening and Early Days

The new train route opened on 11 May 1930. Panmure Station itself opened a few months later, on 16 November 1930. It was located about 100 metres west of Ireland Road. The station had a small building on an island platform, which is a platform with tracks on both sides.

When the station first opened, the area around it was mostly countryside. People could get to the station using two special bridges for walking. One bridge led to Ellerslie-Panmure Highway. The other bridge connected to Mount Wellington Highway.

Changes Over Time

By the late 1950s, the area around Panmure Station had grown a lot. Ireland Place became a street with houses. Mount Wellington Highway had a mix of homes and small factories. More streets were built near the railway. Some of the original access points to the station changed.

By the year 2000, Panmure had become much bigger. However, the train station itself was getting old and worn out. The original station building had been replaced by a smaller one. One of the walking bridges was removed. The platform was also in poor condition.

Moving to a New Location

Not many people were using the old station. In 2003, only about 83 passengers got on trains there each day. Also, the old station was not very close to the town centre. Because of these reasons, it was decided to close the old station. A new Panmure Station would be built in a better spot.

The new station opened in the first half of 2007. It is more modern and closer to the town centre. It also makes it easier to connect with bus services. The new station has two side platforms, which are below the road level. You can get to the station from Ellerslie-Panmure Highway, Mountain Road, and the car park. There is also a "park and ride" area next to one of the platforms.

Moving the station made a big difference to how many people used it. In 2006, before the move, about 268 passengers boarded trains daily. After the new station opened in 2007, this number jumped to 446 passengers per day. By 2018, Panmure Station was the fifth busiest station in Auckland. About 3,700 passengers boarded trains there every day!

Bus-Train Connections

In October 2011, work started on the AMETI project. This project aims to make public transport better and reduce traffic jams in Auckland's eastern suburbs. It is a very large project, costing about $1.5 billion.

As part of AMETI, the Mountain Road bridge near the station was replaced. In May 2012, construction began on a special area for people to walk. This area was built over part of the train platforms. A new bus station with its own special bus lanes was also built next to it.

This new walking area and bus station opened in January 2014. It makes it easy for people to get from the car park and bus stop to both train platforms. You can use escalators and stairs to move between the different levels. This makes Panmure a great place to switch between buses and trains.
