Exploring Panotla's Historic Churches

Panotla is home to several amazing churches. Each one tells a story about the town's past. They show different styles of architecture from various time periods.

San Nicolás de Bari Church

The San Nicolás de Bari church was finished in 1796. It has a very fancy and detailed front, called a baroque facade. This facade is framed by a large arch. The church also has a tall bell tower with two levels.

Baroque Details and Design

The fancy parts of the church, like the facade and bell tower, are made with mortar. They feature special columns called estipite columns. You can also see beautiful carvings of flowers, animals, and even human faces. These designs are typical of the baroque style.

The church faces a large open area called an atrium. This atrium is surrounded by a wall. Inside, the church has one main hall, known as a nave. It features altarpieces in a Neoclassical style. There is also an organ that dates back to the 1600s!

Nuestra Señora de la Defensa Sanctuary

The Nuestra Señora de la Defensa Sanctuary is in the community of San Ambrosio Texantla. It was built between the 1600s and 1700s. The outside of the sanctuary has a cool octagon-shaped dome. Its tower has decorative battlements, called merlons, on its corners. The front of the building is covered in tiles.

The Virgin Mary Image

Inside the sanctuary, you will find a special image of the Virgin Mary. It is called Our Lady of the Defense. This image was brought here by a person named Juan Bautista de Jesús. You can see it on the main altar.
