Early Life and Career

In 1801, Paolo Martinez was chosen to be a Noble Guard by Pius VII, who was the Pope at that time. The Noble Guard was a special group of soldiers who protected the Pope.

Later, he took on important roles in the city of Rome:

  • In 1819, he became a Priore dei Caporioni. This was a leader of one of Rome's districts, like a neighborhood mayor.
  • In 1829, he became a Conservatore of Rome. This was a very important position, similar to a city council member, helping to govern the city.

His Generous Gift

Paolo Maria Martinez is especially remembered for a very generous gift he made in 1833. He gave 12,000 scudi to the San Giacomo degli Incurabili. A scudo was a type of money used a long time ago.

The San Giacomo degli Incurabili was a hospital in Rome that cared for people who were very sick. Paolo's gift helped the hospital continue its important work. Because of his kindness, there is a special plaque at the hospital and a monument in the Santa Maria del Popolo church that remember him.
