Paragonis grandiflora is a special plant that only grows in the Southwest part of Western Australia. It is found nowhere else in the world!
How This Plant Got Its Name
Scientists give names to all living things. This helps them organize and study plants and animals. The plant Paragonis grandiflora was first described in 1867 by a scientist named George Bentham. He called it Agonis grandiflora.
Later, in 2007, two other scientists, Judy Wheeler and Neville Marchant, studied the plant more closely. They realized it was so unique that it needed its own special group, called a genus. So, they moved it into a new genus named Paragonis. This means Paragonis grandiflora is the only species (type of plant) in its genus.
What Paragonis grandiflora Looks Like
This plant is a shrub, which means it's a woody plant smaller than a tree. It usually grows to about one metre (around 3 feet) tall. It has many stems that grow straight up and spread out, giving it an open shape.
The flowers of Paragonis grandiflora are very pretty. They can be white or pink. You can usually see them blooming between July and November.
Where Paragonis grandiflora Grows
This plant likes to grow in different types of soil. You can find it in gravelly or stony soils. It also grows in clay soils that are found over granite or laterite rock. Laterite is a type of soil that is rich in iron and aluminum, often found in warm, wet places.
