Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Parajís (also known as Paraxís) is a small town in Spain. It's located in the province of León, which is part of the Autonomous Community of Castilla y León. Parajís belongs to the municipality of Balboa and is found in a beautiful region called El Bierzo. Currently, about 20 people live in this quiet town.

The Legend of O Demin

Parajís is famous for a special image kept in its chapel. This image represents the devil and is known as "O Demin." In the local Bierzo dialect, "O Demin" simply means "the devil." This image is placed right next to another important image, that of the Guardian Angel.

Stories and Beliefs

People in Parajís have always shown great respect for both "O Demin" and the Guardian Angel. Many legends and stories are told about them and what they mean. One of these legends, which is connected to the Bierzo dialect, was even written down in a book called "El Bierzo" by Julio Alvarez Rubio.

How Old is O Demin?

The exact age of the "O Demin" image is a bit of a mystery. The legends themselves hint at its ancient past. One old saying from the legends goes: "(...) and so much! Ao apparently xa was no tempo aiquí two Moura" which suggests it has been there since the time of the "Moura," mythical beings from old folklore.
