Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samiti (PCJSS) is a political group from Bangladesh. Its name in Bengali means "United People's Party of the Chittagong Hill Tracts." This group was created to speak for the people and native tribes living in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.

Since it started in 1973, the PCJSS has worked to get special rights and recognition for the unique cultures of the tribes in the Hill Tracts. They wanted more control over their own land, which is called Autonomy.

Fighting for Rights

The PCJSS had a military part called the Shanti Bahini. This group was involved in fighting against government forces and people who moved to the area from other parts of Bangladesh. They fought to protect the rights and lands of the local tribes.

A Step Towards Peace

In 1997, a special agreement was signed. It was called the Chittagong Hill Tracts Peace Accord. This agreement was a big step towards peace. Because of this accord, the Shanti Bahini stopped its fighting and gave up its weapons. This allowed the PCJSS to become a regular political party and work within the government system.

The PCJSS continues to work for the rights and well-being of the people in the Chittagong Hill Tracts through peaceful political actions.
