A Look Back at Parksville's History
Parksville was officially made a town way back in 1867! The laws said it would stretch a quarter of a mile in every direction from the center, which was at the crossroads near W. D. Latimer's store. Later, around 1880, the town's border was changed a bit to include the local cemetery and the Christian church.
We don't know exactly when Parksville stopped being an official town, but today it's known as an unincorporated village.
Who Started Parksville?
Parksville was founded by a man named James Parks. He is buried in the Parksville Cemetery. The community is located close to the very center of Kentucky.
The Railroad Days
From 1866 until 1970, Parksville had a very important railroad station. People would travel about 10 miles (16 km) from Danville to catch a train on the L&N Railroad. The station also shipped goods. In 1920, a small lake called Tank Pond was built by the railroad. It was used to refill the steam engines with water. The trains stopped running in October 1987, and the tracks have since been removed.
Parksville High School
Parksville used to have its own high school! It operated from about 1926 until 1963. After that, Boyle County closed all the smaller, rural high schools. Since then, students from Parksville have attended Boyle County High School. The old high school building is now a private home.
Parksville Today
Today, Parksville has a few important places. There's a post office, a general store that sells sandwiches and gas, and a couple of churches: a Baptist Church (started in 1923) and a Church of Christ. You can also find a small restaurant and a fire department with two engines. A volunteer rescue squad helps people in emergencies.
The Parksville Water District is also very important. It provides water to a large part of Boyle County and even some areas in Casey County.
