Understanding places like Parlange helps us learn about how communities grew and changed over time in the American South.

The History of Parlange

Just a short distance northeast of where the Parlange community once stood, you can find the famous Parlange Plantation home. This grand old house was named after Charles Parlange, a Frenchman who played a part in its history. The plantation was first owned by Marquis Vincent de Ternant.

A Famous Resident: Madam X

The Parlange Plantation was also the childhood home of Virginie Amelie Gautreau. She was a descendant of the original owner, Marquis de Ternant. Virginie later became very well-known as the subject of a famous portrait called Madam X, painted by John Singer Sargent. This painting is now displayed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

A Brief Post Office History

For a short time, the community of Parlange even had its own post office. This post office served the people living in the surrounding area from 1902 to 1904. The presence of a post office often shows that a community was active and growing, even if only for a few years.
