Parliament of Paris facts for kids
The Parliament of Paris (called Parlement de Paris in French) was a very old and important court in the Kingdom of France. It started in the 1200s. In 1302, Philip IV of France made Paris its permanent home.
This Parliament met inside the old royal palace in Paris. Today, this same spot on the Île de la Cité is still where the Paris Hall of Justice stands.

Challenges and Changes in the 1500s
In 1589, the city of Paris was controlled by a group called the Catholic League. Because of this, King Henry IV of France asked the Parliament of Paris to meet in a different city, Tours.
However, only a few members of the Parliament actually went to Tours. King Henry also set up another Parliament in Châlons-en-Champagne, a town that stayed loyal to him.
After King Henry IV was killed, the "Parliament of Tours" continued to meet. Other regional parliaments also split. For example, loyal members of the Parliament of Rouen moved to Caen.
Standing Up to the King: The Fronde
The Parliament of Paris played a big part in a conflict called the Fronde. This was a time between 1648 and 1649 when many nobles and the Parliament tried to stop the king from gaining too much power.
In the end, King Louis XIV of France won this struggle. The nobles and the Parliament had to accept the king's authority.
The King's Power: The Flagellation Session
On March 3, 1766, King Louis XV of France held a special meeting with the Parliament of Paris. This meeting is known as la Séance de la Flagellation (which means "the Flagellation Session").
During this meeting, King Louis XV clearly stated that all power belonged only to him. He wanted to make sure everyone knew that he was the ultimate ruler.
