Châlons-en-Champagne facts for kids
Châlons-en-Champagne is a commune in the north of France, which was known as Châlons-sur-Marne until 1998. It is the prefecture of the Marne departement. After the French Revolution of 1789, people made it the prefecture, to counterbalance the importance of Reims, which is the seat of the bishop, and whose cathedral had an important place in French history. The history of Chalons goes back to Roman times: In 274 or 273,the Battle of Chalons opposed the Roman emperor Aurelian to the Gallic emperor Tetricus I. In 2010, about 46.000 people live in the city.
