Parnell, Kansas facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Parnell is a small place in Atchison County, Kansas, in the United States. It's called an unincorporated community. This means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's managed by the county.

The Story of Parnell

Parnell was officially started in the year 1883. When a place is 'platted,' it means its streets and building lots are carefully planned out on a map. This helps people know where to build homes and businesses.

The community was named after a brave soldier, James L. Parnell. He was part of the 13th Kansas Militia Infantry Regiment. Sadly, James Parnell was killed during the American Civil War, a big conflict in American history.

For many years, Parnell had its own post office. It opened in 1883, the same year the community began. The post office served the people of Parnell until 1923.
