The Parque Urbano Dora Colón Clavell (which means Dora Colón Clavell Urban Park in English) is a special park in Ponce, Puerto Rico. It's a calm and relaxing place in the city. The park is named after Dora Colón Clavell, who was the mother of Rafael Hernández Colón. He was an important leader who used to be the governor of Puerto Rico and was from Ponce. The park first opened its doors on December 9, 1995.

Exploring Dora Colón Clavell Urban Park

This park is a great spot for families right in the heart of the city. It's located in Ponce's Historic District, which is an old and important part of the city with many historic buildings. You'll find it close to interesting places like the Ponce Massacre Museum and the Abolition Park.

The park has small shops called kiosks that open when there are special events. There's also a main stage where the Banda Municipal de Ponce (Ponce Municipal Band) often plays free outdoor concerts for everyone to enjoy. Before this park was built, an old hospital called Hospital Damas used to be in this very spot.

How the Park Was Built

The Dora Colón Clavell Urban Park was created in 1995. This happened when Churumba was the mayor of Ponce. In the same year, the park won a special award called "Outstanding Construction Work of the Year" from the College of Engineers and Surveyors of Puerto Rico. This award recognized it as a really well-built project. Building the park cost about $5.5 million.

What You Can Find at the Park

The park offers many cool features for visitors. You can walk through beautiful gardens and see a unique kiosk built in the Mudéjar style. This style comes from old Spanish architecture and looks very decorative. This is where the Ponce Municipal Band plays their traditional Sunday concerts.

There's also a stop for a trolley, which is a fun way to see the city. If you get hungry, you can find a restaurant and food stands. The park even has a large underground parking garage with two levels, which can hold up to 400 cars. On the top level of the garage, there's a special station for the Ponce tourist police. They are there to help visitors and keep everyone safe.
