The Church Building's Story
The church building was constructed between 1897 and 1899. It was first known as Partick East United Free Church. The building was designed by an architect named John Bennie Wilson.
What Does It Look Like?
The church is built in a style called Neo-Gothic. This means it looks like older Gothic churches from the Middle Ages, but it was built much later. The church is made from red sandstone. It also has a cool octagonal (eight-sided) Staircase tower. This tower connects the main church building to the church hall and a room called the vestry.
How the Church Community Grew
The community that meets at Partick Trinity Church today is actually a mix of three older church groups. The first group, Partick East congregation, started in September 1863.
Changing Names and Mergers
- It began as part of the United Presbyterian Church.
- In 1900, this group joined with the Free Church of Scotland. Together, they formed the United Free Church of Scotland.
- Later, this church became part of the larger Church of Scotland. It served the east side of Partick.
In 1984, another church, Dowanhill Parish Church, closed down. Its members joined with the East Partick congregation. This created a new group called East Partick and Dowanhill Parish Church.
Then, in 1990, one more church group, Old Partick Church, also joined them. This final merger created the church we know today as Partick Trinity Parish Church.
