The partridge pigeon (Geophaps smithii) is a special type of bird. It belongs to the Columbidae family, which includes all pigeons and doves. This bird is found only in Australia, meaning it is endemic there.

You can usually find partridge pigeons living in dry areas. Their favorite places are shrublands and grasslands in warm, tropical regions. Sadly, these birds are facing a threat because their natural homes are disappearing.

About the Partridge Pigeon

The partridge pigeon is one of three birds in a group called Geophaps. It is very similar to the squatter pigeon. These two pigeons are close relatives of the spinifex pigeon. All three of these birds are also related to the crested pigeon.

People sometimes call the partridge pigeon by other names. These names include the bare-eyed bronzewing or the bare-eyed partridge bronzewing. They also call it the bare-eyed partridge pigeon.

Different Kinds of Partridge Pigeons

There are two main types, or subspecies, of the partridge pigeon. The biggest difference between them is the color of the skin around their eyes. Sometimes, scientists think of these types as just different color versions of the same bird.

  • G. s. smithii: This type is the original one discovered. You can find it in the far northeast of Western Australia. It also lives in the north of the Northern Territory.
  • G. s. blauwii: This type of partridge pigeon lives in the northern part of Kimberley. Kimberley is a region in Western Australia.
