Parvipsitta is a special group of small, colorful parrots. These birds are often called lorikeets. They belong to the parrot family called Psittaculidae. You can find them living naturally only in Australia.

There are two main types, or species, of Parvipsitta lorikeets:

About Parvipsitta Lorikeets

Parvipsitta lorikeets are known for their bright colors and small size. They love to eat nectar and pollen from flowers, just like hummingbirds! Their special brush-tipped tongues help them collect this sweet food.

Little Lorikeet

The little lorikeet (its scientific name is Parvipsitta pusilla) was first described in 1790.

  • Size: These tiny parrots are about 15 centimeters (6 inches) long.
  • Colors: They are mostly green. They have a bright red patch on their head and throat. Their neck and shoulders look a bit bronze, and their belly is yellowish.
  • Where they live: You can find little lorikeets in eastern and southern Australia, including the island of Tasmania. However, they are not very common in Tasmania.
  • Appearance: They have a black beak and golden eyes.

Purple-crowned Lorikeet

The purple-crowned lorikeet (its scientific name is Parvipsitta porphyrocephala) was first described in 1837.

  • Size: Like the little lorikeet, these birds are also about 15 centimeters (6 inches) long.
  • Colors: They have a dark purple cap on their head, which gives them their name. Their forehead and cheeks are yellow-orange, becoming deeper orange near their beak. Their upper body is green with a bronze tint on their back and neck. Their chest and belly are a pretty powder blue. The feathers under their tail and on their thighs are yellowish-green. Most of their tail is green.
  • Special Feature: Male purple-crowned lorikeets have bright crimson (dark red) patches under their wings, but females do not.
  • Where they live: These lorikeets live in southern Australia, including Kangaroo Island.
