Patriarch Pavle (born Gojko Stojčević) was a very important religious leader. He was the 44th Patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church. A Patriarch is like the main leader of a church. He led the Eastern Orthodox Serbian people from 1990 until he passed away in 2009.

His full title was His Holiness the Archbishop of Peć, Metropolitan of Belgrade and Karlovci, Serbian Patriarch Pavle. He was one of the oldest leaders of an Eastern Orthodox church during his time. Towards the end of his life, he was not well. He spent his last years in a hospital in Belgrade. During this time, another church leader, Metropolitan Amfilohije, helped with his duties.

Patriarch Pavle was born on September 11, 1914. His birth name was Gojko Stojčević. He was born in a place called Kućanci, which was part of Austria-Hungary back then. He grew up to become a monk and then a bishop.

Becoming a Church Leader

In 1990, he was chosen to be the Patriarch. This was a very important role. It meant he was the spiritual head of the Serbian Orthodox Church. He guided many people through difficult times.

His Time as Patriarch

Patriarch Pavle was known for his simple way of life. He was humble and often walked everywhere. He taught people about faith and peace. He was a respected figure for many years. He passed away on November 15, 2009, in Belgrade, Serbia. He was buried at the Rakovica monastery.
