Patriata, also known as New Murree, is a lovely hill station located in the northern part of Punjab, Pakistan. It's about 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) south-east of the famous Murree hill station. Patriata is part of Murree Tehsil, which is a subdivision of Rawalpindi District. This area is quite high up, with its hills reaching about 7,500 feet (2,300 m) above sea level.

Discovering Patriata

Patriata is a popular spot for tourists, especially because its climate is much cooler than places further south. It's a great escape from the heat! To reach the highest points and enjoy amazing views, visitors can use a fun chairlift and cable car system.

The area around Patriata is covered in thick forests, making it a beautiful place to explore nature. You might even spot some wildlife, like monkeys, swinging through the trees. Sometimes, if you're lucky, you might even see a leopard, though they are usually shy! Patriata has become a favorite destination for many people, especially as the main Murree area can sometimes get very crowded.

The Story Behind the Name

Have you ever wondered how Patriata got its unique name? Well, there's an interesting story that people often tell. Long ago, before Pakistan became an independent country, a visitor from another land came to this beautiful place. He didn't know its name and wanted to find out.

He saw an old lady carrying a pot of flour on her head and asked her what the place was called. The old lady didn't understand English very well. She thought he was asking about what she was carrying! So, she replied in her local language, "Puttar, Atta," which means "Son, (it's) flour." From this simple misunderstanding, the place eventually became known as Patriata, sounding similar to "Puttar Atta."
