Patricia Burke Brogan (born March 17, 1926 – died September 5, 2022) was an Irish writer, poet, and artist. She wrote plays and novels, and was known for her creative work.

Patricia's Early Life and Creative Path

Patricia Burke Brogan moved to Galway from County Clare when she was two years old. She grew up in a home filled with books and music. Her father greatly influenced her, and she started reading and writing at a young age.

As Patricia grew up, she loved art, music, and writing. Even though people told her to pick just one, she refused. She felt that each art form showed a different part of her personality. She kept this idea throughout her life, splitting her time between writing and visual art.

Eclipsed: A Play About Important Stories

Patricia's first play, Eclipsed, was very important. It was one of the first plays to tell the stories of women in the Magdalene Laundries. These were places in Ireland where women and girls, often called "fallen women," were sent to work, sometimes against their will.

Patricia was training to become a nun (a novitiate) when she saw what was happening in these laundries. She decided that being a nun was not for her. Instead, she wanted to use her writing to show the difficult lives of these women.

Awards and Challenges for Eclipsed

Eclipsed won many awards, including a Fringe First at the Edinburgh Theatre Festival in 1992. It also won the United States Moss Hart Award in 1994. The play has been performed 61 times in different countries.

However, the play was not always easy to get produced. Many big theatre companies first said it was too controversial. But a small group called Punchbag agreed to perform it in 1992. Patricia faced some criticism for writing about such a sensitive topic. She explained that she wasn't against the Church, but wanted to show that the government also did not help these women.

Other Works and Artistic Contributions

Patricia Burke Brogan wrote two more plays: Requiem of Love and Stained Glass at Samhain (2002). She also published several collections of poetry. Her book, Décollage New and Selected Poems, was released in 2008. Her play "Eclipsed" is even studied by students in Ireland for their Leaving Certificate English exam.

Her memoir, "Memoir with Grykes & Turloughs", was launched in 2014 by Sabina Higgins. Patricia was also one of the people who started the Galway Writers' Workshop in 1981. She regularly attended meetings until 2014. She also often wrote poems and stories for the literary magazine Crannóg.

Patricia was also a talented visual artist. Her artwork appeared on the covers of Crannóg magazine and on the cover of "Galway Then, Galway Now". This book was published for Galway's year as City of Culture in 2020. In 2022, Patricia was given the Freedom of the City of Galway, which is a special honor.
