Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Patricia A. Carpenter is a smart psychologist. A psychologist is a scientist who studies how people think, feel, and behave. In 1997, she was a special professor at Carnegie Mellon University. This was called the Lee and Marge Gregg Professorship of Psychology.

Professor Carpenter has studied many interesting things about the human mind. She looked at how different people use their working memory. Working memory is like a mental notepad where you hold information for a short time. She also studied how quickly people understand things when they are speed reading. Speed reading is reading very fast. She also researched how our brain works during difficult thinking tasks. She used a special brain scan called functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to see this. She also wrote a book with Marcel Just. The book was called The Psychology of Reading and Language Comprehension and came out in 1987.

Her Education and Career Path

Patricia Carpenter worked hard to become a psychologist. She earned her Ph.D. in 1972 from Stanford University. A Ph.D. is a very high university degree. It shows someone is an expert in their field. After getting her degree, she joined the teachers and researchers at Carnegie Mellon University. She has been an important part of their psychology department ever since.

What is Working Memory?

One of Professor Carpenter's main interests is working memory. Imagine you are trying to remember a phone number someone just told you. You hold those numbers in your mind for a few seconds while you dial. That's your working memory in action! It helps us do everyday tasks. These tasks include solving problems or following instructions. Professor Carpenter studied how people's working memory can be different. Some people might be able to hold more information than others.

Understanding Speed Reading

Another area Professor Carpenter studied was speed reading. When you speed read, you try to read very quickly. But it's not just about reading fast. It's also about understanding what you read. Professor Carpenter looked at how well people understood text when they read it at high speeds. This research helps us learn more about how our brains process information quickly. It also helps us understand how we can improve our reading skills.

Brain Scans and Thinking

Professor Carpenter also used a cool technology called functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). This machine lets scientists see which parts of the brain are active. It shows this when a person is doing different tasks. She used fMRI to study how our brains work when we are doing complex thinking. These are called cognitive tasks. For example, she might have people solve puzzles or read difficult sentences. The fMRI would then show which brain areas were busy during these activities. This helps us understand how our brain handles different kinds of thinking.
