2012 Election for State Representative
In 2012, the representative for District 13, Eleanor Chávez, decided not to run again. She chose to run for the New Mexico Senate instead. This left the seat open for new candidates.
Patricia Roybal Caballero ran in the Democratic primary election. This election took place on June 5, 2012. She ran unopposed, meaning no one else from her party ran against her. She won the primary with 834 votes.
Later, on November 6, 2012, the general election was held. Roybal Caballero faced Republican candidate Jose Orozco. She won the election with 4,452 votes. This was about 71.5% of all the votes.
2021 Congressional Special Election
In 2021, a special election was held for New Mexico's 1st congressional district. This happened because Deb Haaland resigned from her position. She was nominated by President Joe Biden to become the United States Secretary of the Interior.
