Patrick Baxter: An Irish Political Figure
Patrick Baxter started his political journey by trying to get elected to Dáil Éireann. He first ran in the 1922 general election but was not successful. However, he tried again the next year.
Early Steps in Irish Politics
In the 1923 Irish general election, Patrick Baxter was elected as a TD. He represented the Farmers' Party for the Cavan area. He received the most votes in his area that year.
He was re-elected in the June 1927 Irish general election. But his number of votes was much lower this time. He then lost his seat in the September 1927 Irish general election.
Trying for the Dáil Again
After the Farmers' Party ended in the late 1920s, Patrick Baxter tried to get back into the Dáil. He ran three more times but was not elected.
- In the 1932 Irish general election, he ran for the Cumann na nGaedheal party in Cavan.
- In the 1933 Irish general election, he ran for the National Centre Party in Clare.
- In the 1943 Irish general election, he ran for the Fine Gael party in Cavan.
A Long Career in the Seanad
Even though he didn't get back into the Dáil, Patrick Baxter had a long career in the Seanad. In 1934, he was elected as a Senator for Fine Gael. This term was supposed to last for nine years.
However, the Free State Seanad was temporarily closed down in 1936. When the Seanad was started up again, he was re-elected in 1938. He was elected to the 2nd Seanad through the Agricultural Panel. This panel represented people involved in farming.
He kept his seat as a Senator until he passed away in 1959. From 1938 onwards, he was a Senator for the Clann na Talmhan party.
Leading the Seanad as Cathaoirleach
From 1954 to 1957, Patrick Baxter held a very important position. He served as the Cathaoirleach of Seanad Éireann. This role is similar to a speaker or chairperson. The Cathaoirleach leads the meetings and makes sure rules are followed.
Patrick Baxter passed away on April 3, 1959, while still serving as a Senator.
