Who Was Patrick I?
Patrick I became the Earl of Dunbar in 1182. This happened after his father, Waltheof, passed away. Patrick was the oldest son of Waltheof and Alina.
Patrick's Role in Scotland
Patrick was a very important person to the Scottish Kings. He served both King William the Lion and King Alexander II of Scotland. Patrick often witnessed important documents for them. He also traveled with the kings when they visited England. This was usually to show respect to the English King for lands they held there.
Patrick also held other important jobs. He was a Justiciar of Lothian, which was like a chief judge for that area. He was also the Warden of Berwick-upon-Tweed. This meant he was in charge of protecting that important border town.
Patrick's family originally came from England. Because of his close ties to the Scottish kings, he sometimes had problems with the English King. King John of England even took some of Patrick's lands for a short time. This might have been because King Alexander II was trying to claim more land in England.
