About Patrick Süskind's Early Life

Patrick Süskind was born in Ambach, a town in Bavaria, Germany. His father, Wilhelm Emanuel Süskind, was also a writer and journalist. His mother, Annemarie Süskind, was a sports teacher. Patrick has an older brother named Martin Erhard Süskind.

After finishing school, Patrick did his mandatory community service. From 1968 to 1974, he studied history at the University of Munich. He also studied in Aix-en-Provence, France. However, he did not graduate from university. With help from his parents, he moved to Paris. There, he focused on writing short stories and screenplays.

Patrick Süskind's Writing Career

Patrick Süskind had his first big success in 1981. This was with his play called Der Kontrabaß (The Double Bass). It was first written as a radio play. This play became very popular. It was performed over 500 times in the 1984–85 theater season. The play features only one character, a musician.

During the 1980s, Süskind also wrote for television. He worked with director Helmut Dietl. They created popular TV shows like Monaco Franze (1983) and Kir Royal (1987). In 1996, he won an award for his screenplay of the film Rossini. He has chosen not to accept other awards.

His Famous Novel: Perfume

Patrick Süskind's most famous book is Perfume: The Story of a Murderer. It was published in 1985. This novel was a bestseller in Germany for nine years. It has been translated into 49 different languages. By 2019, over 20 million copies had been sold worldwide.

Perfume was also listed as one of the 100 best-loved novels by the BBC. In 2006, the book was made into a movie. The film, also called Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, was directed by Tom Tykwer.

Other Works by Süskind

Besides Perfume, Patrick Süskind has written other books. These include a short novel called The Pigeon (1988). He also wrote The Story of Mr Sommer (1991). This book had illustrations by the French artist Sempé. In 1996, he published Three Stories and a Reflection. His essay On Love and Death came out in 2006.

Patrick Süskind's Personal Life

Patrick Süskind prefers to live a very private life. He spends his time between Munich, Germany, and France. He rarely gives interviews to the media. Not many photos of him have been published.

He is married to Tanja Graf, who is a German publisher. They have one son together.
