Patten Mills, Ohio facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Patten Mills is a small place in Washington County, Ohio, in the United States. It is known as an "unincorporated community". This means it is a group of homes and businesses that does not have its own local government, like a city or town would. Instead, the county government usually takes care of services for the area.

What is the History of Patten Mills?

Patten Mills has a history connected to a special type of building: a watermill. A watermill uses the power of flowing water, like a river or creek, to turn a large wheel. This wheel then powers machinery, often for grinding grain into flour or sawing wood.

The community was named after a mill called "Patten's Mills." This important mill was located on a nearby waterway known as Wolf Creek.

For many years, Patten Mills also had its own post office. It opened in 1866. People in the community could send and receive their mail right there. The post office served the area for about 40 years, closing its doors in 1906.
