Pau Milà i Fontanals (born December 26, 1810, in Vilafranca del Penedès – died January 16, 1883, in Barcelona) was a talented Spanish artist. He was a painter, a writer, and a professor. He taught about art history and the study of beauty, called aesthetics.

The Life of Pau Milà i Fontanals

Pau Milà i Fontanals was born into a wealthy family. His family loved culture and supported local plays. Pau's first drawing lessons came from a person who designed theater sets, named Bonaventura Planella. In 1826, his family moved to Barcelona.

Early Education and Art Studies

In Barcelona, Pau finished his basic schooling. In 1833, he joined the Escola de la Llotja, which was an art school. He didn't stay there long, but it helped him get money to study art in Rome.

In Rome, he met other artists from Catalonia. These included Claudi Lorenzale, Pelegrí Clavé, and Manuel Vilar. They all believed in making art "pure" and simple. People compared them to a German art group called the Nazarenes.

Pau stayed in Rome until 1841. During this time, he visited other famous Italian cities. He went to Venice, Florence, Orvieto, and Siena. The drawings he made during these trips are now kept at the Reial Acadèmia Catalana de Belles Arts de Sant Jordi.

Becoming a Professor and Preserving Art

In 1851, Pau became a professor at the Escola de la Llotja. He worked in the architecture department. He started working to protect old buildings and art in Barcelona. He kept this job for five years before leaving.

In 1861, he was chosen to lead a cultural group called the Ateneu Català. Today, this group is known as the Ateneu Barcelonès [ca].

Important Preservation Projects

One of Pau's first big projects was with the Comissió Provincial de Monuments [ca]. This group worked to protect historical sites. He helped make the Chapel of Santa Àgata a protected historical building. He studied its structure with another expert, Elies Rogent, and they began to fix it.

In 1868, the Escola de la Llotja made him an "Honorary Scholar." This meant he could continue his work protecting art with the school's help. In 1877, he became the president of the Comissió Provincial de Monuments. He spent much of his life making sure important art and buildings were saved for the future.
