Paul's Geography and Nature
Paul has a very rugged landscape with many mountains. It has deep valleys formed by rivers like Ribeira do Paul and Ribeira da Janela. The lowest point in the southwest is a large crater called Cova Caldera.
The highest point in Paul is Pico da Cruz, which is 1,585 meters (about 5,200 feet) tall. Part of the beautiful Cova-Paul-Ribeira da Torre Natural Park is located in Paul. This park helps protect the area's nature. Main roads connect Pombas to other towns like Ribeira Grande and Porto Novo.
A Brief History of Paul
The area of Paul has a long history of being a separate municipality. In 1867, Paul and Ribeira Grande became their own municipalities. Before that, the whole island of Santo Antão was just one big municipality.
Later, in 1895, Paul and Ribeira Grande were joined together again. But in 1917, they became separate municipalities once more. Paul got its current borders in 1962. This happened when the new municipality of Porto Novo was created.
