Early life

Paul Dubois was born in Nogent-sur-Seine, France. His father was a notary, which is like a legal helper, and wanted Paul to study law. But Paul loved art much more! He decided to become a sculptor instead. He was inspired by his great-uncle, Jean-Baptiste Pigalle, who was also a famous sculptor.

In 1857, Paul Dubois showed his art for the first time at the Paris Salon. This was a very important art show in Paris. He used the name Dubois-Pigalle for his art.

Career

In 1858, Paul Dubois began studying art at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris. This was a top art school. The next year, he traveled to Rome, Italy. In Rome, he spent four years studying and copying many great sculptures. He also met other artists like Henri Chapu and Georges Bizet.

Paul was lucky because his family supported his studies. He did not have to worry about money while he was learning. While in Rome, he created sculptures like Saint Jean-Baptiste and Narcisse. In 1863, he won an award at the Paris Salon for his work.

When he returned to France, he created a very popular sculpture called Chanteur florentin du XVe siècle. It showed a young singer from Florence, Italy. This artwork made him very famous.

Paul Dubois won more awards, including a special "médaille d'honneur" at the Salon des beaux-arts in 1865 and 1876. He also received the Légion d'honneur, which is a very high award in France. He was made a Knight in 1867, an Officer in 1874, a Commander in 1886, and finally received the Grand Cross in 1889.

Besides sculpting, Paul Dubois was also a skilled painter. After 1870, he spent a lot of time painting portraits. He also taught art at the Académie Julian, another famous art school. Paul Dubois passed away in 1905 from pneumonia.
