Paul Grégoire, OC (born October 24, 1911 – died October 30, 1993) was an important Canadian leader in the Roman Catholic Church. He was a Cardinal and served as the Archbishop of Montreal from 1968 to 1990. He became a Cardinal in 1988.

Life and Education of Paul Grégoire
Paul Grégoire was born in Viauville, a part of Montreal, Quebec. His parents were J. Albert Grégoire and Marie Lavoie. Soon after he was born, his family moved to Verdun. He had two younger brothers. His parents also adopted nine of his cousins, making their family quite large.
Early Studies and Priesthood
Paul Grégoire began his studies at the Minor Seminary of St. Thérèse in Blainville. He attended from 1925 to 1933. After that, he went to the Major Seminary of Montréal. He studied there from 1933 to 1937. He earned a special degree in theology, which is the study of religious faith.
On May 22, 1937, Paul Grégoire became a priest. He then taught at St. Thérèse in Blainville until 1939. He continued his education at the University of Montréal from 1939 to 1942. During this time, he earned several advanced degrees. These included doctorates in philosophy and history, and a diploma in teaching.
Becoming an Archbishop and Cardinal
Paul Grégoire became the Archbishop of Montreal in 1968. This meant he was the main leader of the Catholic Church in the Montreal area. He served in this important role for many years, until 1990.
In 1988, he was given an even higher honor. He was made a Cardinal. Cardinals are very important leaders in the Catholic Church. They help the Pope and can even vote for a new Pope.
Recognition and Legacy
In 1979, Paul Grégoire was honored by Canada. He was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. This award recognizes Canadians who have made great contributions to the country.
Paul Grégoire passed away on October 30, 1993. He is remembered for his long service and dedication to the Catholic Church in Canada.
