Paul Henry O'Neill (born December 4, 1935) was an important American leader who worked in both business and government. He is best known for serving as the 72nd United States Secretary of the Treasury under President George W. Bush. This job meant he was in charge of the country's money and economy. Before working for the government, O'Neill was a very successful business executive, leading a big company called Alcoa.

Early Life and Education

Paul H. O'Neill was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on December 4, 1935. He grew up and went to college, earning degrees from several universities. He studied at California State University-Fresno, Claremont Graduate University, and Indiana University-Bloomington. His education helped him prepare for a long career in finance and management.

Career in Business

Before joining the government, Paul O'Neill had a very successful career in the business world. From 1987 to 1999, he was the chairman and CEO of Alcoa. Alcoa is a huge company that makes aluminum products. Under his leadership, Alcoa became even more successful. He retired as chairman of Alcoa at the end of 2000.

In 1995, O'Neill also became the chairman of the RAND Corporation. This is a famous organization that does research to help solve problems for governments and other public groups.

Serving the Country

In January 2001, Paul O'Neill was chosen by President George W. Bush to be the United States Secretary of the Treasury. This is a very important job in the U.S. government. The Secretary of the Treasury is in charge of the country's money, taxes, and financial system. They also advise the President on economic matters.

O'Neill served in this role until December 2002. During his time as Secretary, he worked on many important economic issues facing the country. After leaving his position, he shared his thoughts and experiences about his time in the administration.

Later Years

Paul O'Neill continued to be involved in public discussions about the economy and government after his time as Secretary of the Treasury. He passed away in 2020. His career showed how someone could move between leading big businesses and serving in high-level government positions.
