The State Seminary Act, passed by Indiana's General Assembly on January 20, 1820 to establish Indiana University.

Indiana University (IU) is a large group of public universities in the state of Indiana, USA. It is one of the biggest university systems in the country. The university's motto is Lux et Veritas, which means "Light and Truth" in Latin.

Campuses of Indiana University

Indiana University has many campuses across the state. These include two main campuses, five regional campuses, and two centers linked to IUPUI.

Main Campuses

  • Indiana University Bloomington (IU Bloomington) is the oldest and largest campus. It is often called the "flagship" campus. Here, students can study many subjects. These include music at the Jacobs School of Music and business at the Kelley School of Business.
  • Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) is in Indianapolis. It is a special partnership between Indiana University and Purdue University. This campus is known for its health sciences programs, like the Indiana University School of Medicine. In 2024, IUPUI will split into two separate universities. One will be part of IU, and the other will be part of Purdue.

Regional Campuses

Indiana University also has five regional campuses. They offer more ways for students across Indiana to get a great education.

  • Indiana University East (IU East) is in Richmond. It opened in 1971.
  • Indiana University Kokomo (IU Kokomo) is in Kokomo. It started in 1945.
  • Indiana University Northwest (IU Northwest) is in Gary. It was established in 1963.
  • Indiana University South Bend (IU South Bend) is in South Bend. It opened in 1922.
  • Indiana University Southeast (IU Southeast or IUS) is in New Albany. It started in 1941.

IUPUI-Administered Campuses

Two more campuses are currently managed by IUPUI.

  • Indiana University–Purdue University Columbus (IUPUC) is in Columbus. It opened in 1970. After the IUPUI split, it will become Indiana University Columbus.
  • Indiana University Fort Wayne (IU Fort Wayne) is in Fort Wayne. It started in 2018. This campus focuses on health sciences programs.

Some of Indiana University's schools offer programs at more than one campus. For example, the School of Nursing has programs at Bloomington, Indianapolis, and Fort Wayne.

University Funding and Research

Indiana University has a large amount of money called an endowment. This money helps the university pay for things like buildings, scholarships, and research. In 2023, the endowment was over $3.5 billion.

The Indiana University Research and Technology Corporation (IURTC) helps IU's professors and researchers. They help turn new ideas and discoveries into useful products or companies. Since 1997, this group has helped create many inventions and new businesses.

Notable Faculty at IU

Indiana University has many talented professors and researchers. Some have won major awards for their work.

  • Elinor Ostrom – A Nobel Prize winner in economics.
  • Daniel P. Friedman – A professor known for his work in computer science.
  • Richard DiMarchi – A leading scientist in chemistry and biomolecular sciences.

Athletics and Sports Teams

Indiana University has strong sports programs. Students can play many different sports.

Core Campus Sports

The main campuses, IU Bloomington and IUPUI, have NCAA Division I sports teams.

  • The Indiana Hoosiers represent IU Bloomington. They play in the Big Ten Conference. They compete in 24 different sports.
  • The IUPUI Jaguars represent IUPUI. They play in the Horizon League. They have 18 different sports teams. When IUPUI splits in 2024, the IU Indianapolis campus will keep the Jaguars' sports programs.

Regional Campus Sports

Most of IU's regional campuses also have sports teams. They compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.

  • The IU Northwest RedHawks and IU South Bend Titans play in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference.
  • The IU East Red Wolves, IU Kokomo Cougars, IU Southeast Grenadiers, and IUPUC Crimson Pride play in the River States Conference.

Awards and Honors

Indiana University gives out special awards to recognize people for their great achievements.

University Medals

  • The University Medal is the highest award from IU. It honors people for amazing contributions to the university or in areas like arts, science, and law.
  • The Indiana University President's Medal for Excellence honors people for public service, work for IU, or great achievements in their jobs or in arts, science, and education.
  • The Thomas Hart Benton Mural Medallion celebrates people who show the values of IU and the wider academic world.

Faculty Awards

IU also has awards to celebrate its excellent professors.

  • Distinguished Professorships are the highest academic honors for professors.
  • University Distinguished Teaching Awards recognize professors who are excellent at teaching.
