As of 2024, more than 9,000 students attended IUP. The main campus is located about 55 miles (89 km) northeast of Pittsburgh. IUP also has smaller campuses in Punxsutawney, Northpointe, and Monroeville. The university is recognized for meeting high educational standards.

History

How the University Began

IUP Indiana Sutton Hall 2010
Sutton Hall is the oldest building on campus and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

IUP started in 1871 as the Indiana Normal School. A "normal school" was a type of school that trained people to become teachers. It officially opened in 1875 with 225 students. At first, the entire school, including classrooms and a practice school for student teachers, was inside a single building.

Becoming a University

In 1920, the state of Pennsylvania took over the school. It began to change and grow.

  • In 1927, it became the State Teachers College at Indiana and could grant official college degrees.
  • In 1959, its name changed to Indiana State College.
  • Finally, in 1965, it became the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, the name it has today.

Recent Changes

The number of students at IUP was highest in 2012. Since then, fewer students have enrolled. This created money challenges for the university. To handle these challenges, the university had to make some changes. This included reducing the number of staff and teachers in 2020 and changing some leadership positions in 2023.

Life on Campus

IUP's main campus is 374 acres (1.51 km2) and has 62 buildings made of red brick. The oldest building is John Sutton Hall. It is so important that it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, a list of special historic sites in the U.S. Another historic building on campus is the Breezedale Alumni Center, which used to be the home of a Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice.

The campus has many cool places for students, including:

  • A planetarium to study stars and planets.
  • A museum and a black box theater for plays.
  • The Hadley Union Building (HUB), a center for student activities.
  • A large music library and a newly updated building for music students.
  • Stapleton Library, which has over 900,000 books.

In the center of the campus is a beautiful area called the Oak Grove. A group works to plant trees and flowers there that are native to the area.

IUP also has an academy for students who want to become chefs and a police academy to train police officers. The university has updated many of its student dorms, replacing older buildings with modern suites.

Sports at IUP

IUP has 19 varsity sports teams, which are official university teams that compete against other schools. The teams are called the Crimson Hawks. They compete in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) as part of the NCAA Division II.

IUP teams are often very successful. The football team played in the NCAA Division II national championship game twice, in 1990 and 1993. The men's basketball team also reached the national championship game twice, in 2010 and 2015.

Other sports are also popular. The rugby team finished third in the nation in 2000. The men's ice hockey team has won its league championship and played in national tournaments. The men's lacrosse team has also won its conference championship.
