The Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) is a big group of public universities in Pennsylvania. It's the second largest provider of higher education (which means college and university learning) in the state. It's also one of the largest university systems in the United States and among the biggest in the world!
PASSHE includes 14 state-owned schools. All of these schools are part of the NCAA Division II, which means their sports teams compete at that level.
How PASSHE Started
The story of PASSHE began a long time ago. In 1857, a law called the Normal School Act was passed. This law created 12 school districts. These schools were first called "normal schools" because they trained teachers to follow "normal" teaching methods.
Later, in 1911, another law said that Pennsylvania should buy all these schools. Over time, these normal schools changed. They became state teacher's colleges, then state colleges.
Finally, on November 12, 1982, a new law called Act 188 was signed. This law officially created the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE). It started on July 1, 1983. This act changed the state colleges into the universities we know today.
