Indiana University (IU) is a large group of public universities in the U.S. state of Indiana. It has two main campuses and five smaller regional campuses. There are also two regional centers that are part of Indiana University Indianapolis. The biggest and most well-known campus is Indiana University Bloomington.

Campuses and Locations

Indiana University has several campuses where students can learn and grow. These campuses are spread across Indiana.

Main Campuses

  • Indiana University Bloomington (IU Bloomington) is the main campus of Indiana University. It has many important schools, like the College of Arts and Sciences and the Jacobs School of Music. Students can study subjects from business to computer science here.
  • Indiana University Indianapolis (IU Indianapolis or IU Indy) is a major campus in the city of Indianapolis. It focuses on research and health sciences. This campus is home to schools like the School of Medicine and the School of Dentistry. It was created in 2024.

Regional Campuses

Besides the main campuses, Indiana University has five regional campuses. These offer learning opportunities closer to home for many students in Indiana.

  • Indiana University East (IU East) was started in 1971 in Richmond.
  • Indiana University Kokomo (IU Kokomo) was started in 1945 in Kokomo.
  • Indiana University Northwest (IU Northwest) was started in 1963 in Gary.
  • Indiana University South Bend (IU South Bend) was started in 1922 in South Bend.
  • Indiana University Southeast (IU Southeast or IUS) was started in 1941 in New Albany.

Regional Learning Centers

There are also two regional centers that are managed by IU Indianapolis.

  • Indiana University Columbus (IUC) was started in 1970 in Columbus.
  • Indiana University Fort Wayne (IU Fort Wayne) was started in 2018 in Fort Wayne. This center focuses on health sciences programs.

Programs Across Campuses

Some schools at Indiana University offer their programs at more than one campus. For example, the School of Medicine has programs at different IU campuses and even at other universities. This helps more students access these important studies.

University Funding and Research

Indiana University has a large fund, called an endowment, which helps support its many programs. In 2016, this fund was over $1.986 billion. The university's total yearly budget is more than $3 billion.

The Indiana University Research and Technology Corporation (IURTC) helps IU professors and researchers. It helps them turn their new discoveries into useful products or services. Since 1997, this group has helped create over 1,800 inventions and 38 new companies.

Indiana University has a long and interesting history. It was founded in 1820.

21st Century Events

In April 2002, after the IU men's basketball team lost a championship game, some students and people in Bloomington caused damage. About 45 people were arrested during this event.

In November 2023, there were protests at IU related to the Gaza war. Some students and faculty expressed concerns about free speech and university policies. In April 2024, more protests occurred, leading to arrests. The university has since updated its policies regarding protests and expressive activities on campus.

Indiana University has many talented professors and researchers. Some of them are:

  • Elinor Ostrom – A Nobel Prize winner in economics.
  • Richard DiMarchi – A leading professor in chemistry.

University Sports

Indiana University has strong sports programs. Both of the main campuses have NCAA Division I athletic teams.

  • The Indiana Hoosiers represent the Bloomington campus. They are part of the Big Ten Conference and compete in many different sports.
  • The IU Indy Jaguars represent the Indianapolis campus. They compete in the Horizon League.

Many of IU's regional campuses also have sports teams. These teams compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

University Awards

Indiana University gives out special awards to recognize people's achievements.

  • The University Medal is the highest award given by IU. It honors people who have made great contributions to the university or in fields like arts and science.
  • The Indiana University President's Medal for Excellence honors people for public service or achievements in their jobs.
