Paul Reiser (born March 30, 1956) is a well-known American actor, comedian, and writer. You might know him from his roles as Michael Taylor in the TV show My Two Dads or as Paul Buchman in Mad About You. He also played Detective Jeffrey Friedman in the Beverly Hills Cop movies.
Paul Reiser is also famous for playing Jim Neiman in the movie Whiplash. More recently, he gained many fans as Dr. Sam Owens in the popular Netflix series Stranger Things. He also appeared as Carter Burke in the classic sci-fi movie Aliens.
He was even ranked among the "100 Greatest Stand-ups of All Time" by Comedy Central in 2004.

Paul Reiser's Early Life and Education
Paul Reiser was born in New York City in 1956. His mother, Helen, was one of the first women to graduate from Baruch College. His father, Samuel, was a health food distributor. Paul comes from a Romanian Jewish family and has three sisters.
He went to the East Side Hebrew Institute and then Stuyvesant High School. Later, he studied music at Binghamton University. While in college, Paul performed in student theater shows. He discovered his talent for comedy by performing in clubs during his summer breaks.
Paul Reiser's Career in Acting and Comedy
Starting as a Stand-Up Comedian
Paul Reiser began his career as a stand-up comedian. His big break in movies came in 1982 with Diner. In this film, he played Modell, a character who secretly wanted to be a stand-up comedian. This role helped Hollywood notice his talent.
Famous Movie Roles
After Diner, Paul played a detective in Beverly Hills Cop (1984). He returned for the sequels Beverly Hills Cop II (1987) and Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. He also had a memorable role as the tricky Carter Burke in James Cameron's Aliens (1986). Other movies include The Marrying Man (1991) and Bye Bye Love (1995).
Success on Television
Reiser starred in the TV sitcom My Two Dads from 1987 to 1990. In this show, he was one of two men who might be the father of a teenage girl. He became even more famous as Paul Buchman in Mad About You (1992–1999). He also helped create this comedy series, where Helen Hunt played his wife. Paul even helped write the show's theme song, "The Final Frontier."
His role in Mad About You earned him many nominations for awards like the Emmy and Golden Globe. The show was so popular that it was brought back as a limited series in 2019.
Other Projects and Recent Work
In 2001, Paul took on a serious role in the British TV film My Beautiful Son. He also made a guest appearance as himself on Larry David's sitcom, Curb Your Enthusiasm, in 2002.
Paul Reiser also wrote and starred in his own comedy series, The Paul Reiser Show, in 2011. He also co-created the show There's... Johnny! in 2017. In recent years, you might have seen him in films like Whiplash and TV series such as Red Oaks, Stranger Things and The Boys.
In 2022, he appeared in the third season of The Boys as The Legend. He is set to return for the fifth season. In 2024, Reiser will explore his Aliens character, Carter Burke, in a new Marvel comic. This comic will imagine what if Burke had survived. Paul is co-writing this book with his son, Leon Reiser.

Paul Reiser is also a successful author. He has written three books:
- Couplehood: This book is about the funny and sometimes challenging parts of being in a relationship.
- Babyhood: This book shares his experiences as a new father.
- Familyhood: Released in 2011, this book is a collection of funny stories and thoughts about family life.
Couplehood is unique because it starts on page 145! Paul explained this was his way of making readers feel like they had already accomplished something.
Paul Reiser's Personal Life
Paul Reiser married Paula Ravets on August 21, 1988. They have two sons, born in 1995 and 2000.
Paul Reiser is also related to other talented people. His cousin, Will Reiser, is a screenwriter and producer. Will wrote the movie 50/50 (2011). Another cousin is the legal expert Richard Epstein.
