Paul Morton's Early Life
Paul Morton grew up in a Christian family. His father was a pastor who led two churches. One church was in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. The other was in Detroit, Michigan, USA.
Becoming a Pastor
In 1972, Paul Morton moved to New Orleans, Louisiana. He became an associate pastor at the Greater St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church. When he became the main pastor, he introduced new worship styles. These styles, called Pentecostal and Charismatic, emphasize a lively and spiritual way of worship.
Soon after becoming the main pastor, Paul Morton married Debra Brown. They have three children: Jasmine, Paul Jr., and Christian. His son, Paul Jr., later became a Grammy Award-winning musician. He is known by his stage name, PJ Morton.
Starting a New Fellowship
While leading Greater St. Stephen Full Gospel Baptist Church, Paul Morton started the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship. This group began as a new movement within the National Baptist Convention, USA.
The movement grew and became its own separate church group in 1994. Leaders of the National Baptist Convention suggested that Morton and his group should leave. They were worried the movement would become a separate group anyway.
In March 1993, Paul Morton was consecrated as a bishop. This ceremony took place in New Orleans. By 1997, his church, Greater St. Stephen, had grown to 18,000 members. It had three different locations.
In November 1993, he helped create the Joint College of African-American Pentecostal Bishops. He did this with J. Delano Ellis, Wilbert Sterling McKinley, and Roy E. Brown.
Later Years and Retirement
In 2005, Paul Morton founded another church. It was called Changing A Generation Full Gospel Baptist Church. This church is located in Metro Atlanta.
In 2013, he announced that he planned to retire. Two years later, in 2015, he officially retired from his role. He stepped down as the main leader of the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship.
