Paul Wolfisberg's Football Journey
Paul Wolfisberg was born in 1933 in Horw, Switzerland. He started his football career playing for his local team, FC Horw.
Early Playing Days
When he was 17, Paul joined FC Luzern. In 1954, he moved to FC Biel-Bienne while he was studying. He returned to FC Luzern in 1955. This was after coach Rudi Gutendorf asked him to come back.
In 1960, Paul Wolfisberg achieved a big success. He was the captain of FC Luzern when they won the Swiss Cup. This is a very important football competition in Switzerland. He stopped playing football professionally in 1966.
Becoming a Coach
After his playing career, Paul Wolfisberg became a football manager. In 1966, he took over as manager of SC Buochs. Under his leadership, SC Buochs was at the top of the Swiss Challenge League in 1972. He briefly left his role but returned in December 1972.
In 1975, he came back to FC Luzern as a co-manager. He then moved on to coach SC Kriens in October 1975. He stayed there until 1977, when he became the club's technical director. This role meant he helped with the team's overall football strategy.
In 1978, Paul Wolfisberg returned to FC Luzern again. This time, he was their technical director. FC Luzern was leading the Swiss Super League in 1979 during his time there.
Coaching the National Team
One of Paul Wolfisberg's most important roles was coaching the Swiss national team. He was appointed head coach in 1981. He led the team in 52 matches.
He coached the national team until 1985. He left the role after the team did not qualify for the 1986 FIFA World Cup. In 1989, he also supported Uli Stielike, who was the head of the national team at that time.
Paul Wolfisberg passed away at his home in Horw on August 24, 2020. He was 87 years old. He left a lasting mark on Swiss football as both a player and a coach.
