Pawlu "Paul" Xuereb was an important Maltese politician. He was born on July 21, 1923, and passed away on September 6, 1994. He served as the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Malta from 1986 to 1987. After that, he became the acting president of Malta from 1987 to 1989.
Early Life and Education
Paul Xuereb studied in London, England. He attended the Regent Street Polytechnic. There, he learned about journalism and political science.
After finishing his studies, he returned to Malta in 1950. He worked as a managing director for a trading company. Later, in 1958, he taught at the Lyceum school.
In 1959, Xuereb joined Freedom Press. He worked as a literary editor and assistant editor. This was for The Voice of Malta newspaper. It was connected to the Malta Labour Party. In 1964, he became the general manager of the party's publishing house.
Political Career
Paul Xuereb started his political journey in 1962. He ran in the general election that year. He was elected as a Member of Parliament.
He kept his seat in several elections: 1966, 1971, 1976, and 1981. From 1971 to 1976, he served as a Cabinet Minister. This means he was part of the government's main decision-making group.
Acting President of Malta
In 1987, Paul Xuereb was appointed as the acting President of Malta. The Prime Minister chose him for this role. He took over after the third President, Agatha Barbara, finished her term.
Xuereb officially took his oath of office on February 16, 1987. He served as acting President until April 1989.
Legacy
A bronze statue was made in Paul Xuereb's honor. The sculptor Anton Agius designed it. The statue is located in Howards' Gardens. This area is just outside the old city walls of Mdina.
