Paulin Obame-Nguema was an important politician from Gabon, a country in Central Africa. He was born on December 28, 1934, and passed away on December 11, 2023. He served as the Prime Minister of Gabon for several years, from November 1994 to January 1999. He was also a member of Gabon's parliament, called the National Assembly of Gabon.
Becoming Prime Minister (1994–1999)
Paulin Obame-Nguema was born in Libreville, the capital city of Gabon. This happened on December 28, 1934. In 1994, the government and opposition groups in Gabon had important talks. These talks led to an agreement called the Paris Accords.
After this agreement, President Omar Bongo chose Obame-Nguema to be the Prime Minister. Obame-Nguema was a member of the Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG). Some members of the opposition joined his government. However, two main opposition leaders chose not to be part of it.
In June 1996, Obame-Nguema offered to resign from his job. But President Bongo asked him to stay on as Prime Minister. Later that year, in December 1996, there was an election for parliament. Obame-Nguema was elected to the National Assembly. He represented the Estuaire Province.
After the election, President Bongo again appointed him Prime Minister. This happened on January 27, 1997. A new government was then formed under Obame-Nguema on January 28.
Later Political Work
In January 1999, President Bongo chose Jean-François Ntoutoume-Emane to become the new Prime Minister. Obame-Nguema then took on a different role. He became the Minister of State for Public Health, Population, and Social Affairs. A short time later, on February 10, 1999, he became the Minister of Social Affairs.
He continued his work in parliament. In December 2001, he was re-elected to the National Assembly. He again represented the Estuaire Province.
In December 2006, another parliamentary election took place. Obame-Nguema was re-elected to the National Assembly. He represented the Kango area in Estuaire Province. Because he was the oldest member of the National Assembly, he led the first meeting of the new parliament. This meeting happened in January 2007. During this meeting, the leaders of the National Assembly were chosen.
Guy Nzouba-Ndama was re-elected as the President of the National Assembly. However, some opposition members disagreed with how other leaders were being chosen. They left the room and did not vote. After this, Obame-Nguema invited Nzouba-Ndama to take his seat as President.
In September 2008, the PDG party held a big meeting. At this meeting, Obame-Nguema was named President Bongo's Personal Representative. This meant he would represent the President.

Paulin Obame-Nguema passed away in Libreville, Gabon. He died on December 11, 2023, at the age of 88.
