About Pauline Smith's Life
Pauline Smith was born in Oudtshoorn, South Africa, on April 2, 1882. She grew up in a beautiful area called the Little Karoo. Her father, Herbert Urmson Smith, was an English doctor. Her mother, Jessie, was from Scotland.
Early Life and Education
When Pauline was thirteen, she moved to Scotland to attend boarding school. After that, she never lived in South Africa permanently again. However, she often returned for long visits throughout her life.
Writing Inspiration and Career
One of her long visits to South Africa was in 1913–1914. She kept a detailed journal during this time. This journal later became the basis for many of her stories. It inspired her famous collection The Little Karoo and her novel The Beadle.
In 1908, Pauline met Arnold Bennett, a well-known English novelist. He saw her talent and encouraged her to write fiction about South Africa. This encouragement helped her become a published author.
Her Best-Known Books
Pauline Smith is most famous for two works. These are her collection of short stories, The Little Karoo, published in 1925. The other is her novel, The Beadle, which came out in 1926.
Later Years and Legacy
