Paulo José Hespanha Caruso (born December 6, 1949 – died March 4, 2023) was a famous Brazilian artist. He was known for his funny and smart drawings. He worked as a satirical cartoonist, which means he drew cartoons that made fun of serious topics like politics. He was also a caricaturist, drawing funny pictures that exaggerated people's features. Besides drawing, he was an illustrator and a television personality.

Life and Work

Paulo Caruso was born in São Paulo, Brazil. He had a twin brother named Chico, who was also a cartoonist. In 1976, Paulo finished his architecture studies at the University of São Paulo. He started his drawing career in the late 1960s at a newspaper called Diário Popular.

Famous Comic Strips

Paulo Caruso became very well-known for his comic strip called "Avenida Brasil." This comic strip was published for 25 years in a weekly magazine called Istoé. It also appeared in another newspaper, Jornal do Brasil. His comic strips were so popular that they were collected and published in several books. He also worked with many other important magazines and newspapers. He even contributed to alternative publications like O Pasquim and Movimento.

Television and Music

Paulo Caruso was a regular guest on the TV Cultura talk show Roda Viva. He started appearing on the show in 1986, right from the beginning. On the show, he would draw caricatures of the guests in real-time while they were being interviewed. His last appearance on Roda Viva was on January 2, 2023. Besides his art, Paulo was also a musician. He helped start a jazz band called Muda Brasil Tancredo Jazz Band. He also co-founded a comedy music group called Conjunto Nacional band.

Awards and Recognition

Throughout his career, Paulo Caruso received many awards and honors for his work. In 1994, he won the award for best cartoonist from the Associação Paulista de Críticos de Arte (APCA). In 2003, he received the Troféu HQ Mix for his book São Paulo por Paulo Caruso. He was also honored with the Prêmio Angelo Agostini for Master of National Comics in 2005.

Paulo Caruso passed away on March 4, 2023, at the age of 73. He died from intestinal cancer. After his death, the President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, shared his sadness. He said that Paulo's "sharp drawing and his humor are already part of the national memory." This means Paulo Caruso's art and humor will always be remembered in Brazil.
