After graduating, she worked as an assistant professor at Salamanca University from 1960 to 1962. Then, from 1962 to 1963, she was an Assistant of Spanish Language at the Bordeaux Academy in France. From 1963 to 1980, she taught in high schools in different Spanish cities like Vitoria, Murcia, and Hospitalet de Llobregat.

In 1973, she earned her doctorate degree. Her special research was on political and social words used in Spain between 1869 and 1873. This work was published a few years later in 1977.

From 1980 to 1993, she was a full professor at the Universidad de Barcelona. Later, from 1993 until 2015, she was a Professor of Spanish Philology at Universidad Pompeu Fabra. There, she led a research group called Infolex. This group was part of the University Institute of Applied Linguistics.

María Paz Battaner Arias is a member of several important language organizations, such as Euralex, DSNA, and AELEX. She also helps guide the Revista de Lexicografía, which is a magazine about dictionaries. She has guided thirteen students through their doctoral studies.
