María Paz Battaner Arias was born in Salamanca, Spain, on March 19, 1938. She is a Spanish expert in language and dictionaries. Since January 29, 2017, she has been an important member of the Spanish Royal Academy. This is a very old and respected group that helps guide the Spanish language.
María Paz Battaner Arias was chosen for her role in the Academy on December 3, 2015. She took over a special "chair" or position, which had been empty since 2013. She has also created and published many dictionaries. She has done a lot of work on how to teach the Spanish language. Her main areas of study are how words are formed and used (lexicology) and how dictionaries are made (lexicography). Early Life and Education
María Paz Battaner Arias studied Romance Philology at Salamanca University. She graduated in 1960. At that time, some famous language experts taught there, like Alonso Zamora Vicente and Fernando Lázaro Carreter.
Teaching and Research Career
After graduating, she worked as an assistant professor at Salamanca University from 1960 to 1962. Then, from 1962 to 1963, she was an Assistant of Spanish Language at the Bordeaux Academy in France. From 1963 to 1980, she taught in high schools in different Spanish cities like Vitoria, Murcia, and Hospitalet de Llobregat.
In 1973, she earned her doctorate degree. Her special research was on political and social words used in Spain between 1869 and 1873. This work was published a few years later in 1977.
From 1980 to 1993, she was a full professor at the Universidad de Barcelona. Later, from 1993 until 2015, she was a Professor of Spanish Philology at Universidad Pompeu Fabra. There, she led a research group called Infolex. This group was part of the University Institute of Applied Linguistics.
Important Roles and Achievements
María Paz Battaner Arias is a member of several important language organizations, such as Euralex, DSNA, and AELEX. She also helps guide the Revista de Lexicografía, which is a magazine about dictionaries. She has guided thirteen students through their doctoral studies. She also advised Televisión Española, a Spanish TV channel, on a show called Hablando claro from 1988 to 1992.
From 1993 to 1999, she was the Dean of the Faculty of Translation and Interpretation at Pompeu Fabra University. From May 2008 until March 2015, she served as the Síndic de Greuges (an ombudsman or public defender) for Pompeu Fabra University.
In 2006, she received the Medalla Narcís Monturiol. This is a special award from the government of Catalonia, Spain, for scientific and technological achievements. In 2015, she became an Emeritus Professor of Spanish Philology at Universidad Pompeu Fabra. She also led AELEX, which is the Spanish Association of Lexicographical Studies. She worked on a project about how words are grouped and related in dictionaries. She also worked on an Electronic Dictionary of Learning for people learning Spanish as a foreign language.
